How To Hire Your Wedding DJ

A wedding DJ can make or break your wedding reception so it’s important to choose wisely. There is a big difference between someone that presses play on an iPod and a professional DJ.

Most people have never hired a DJ before, so when it comes to their wedding they aren’t sure what to ask when interviewing potential DJs.  Here are a few basic tips to follow to ensure you hire the right DJ for your wedding.

  1. Reputation. Check out online reviews of the DJ, ask for references and check with other vendors to see if they recommend the DJ.
  2. Experience. How many years has the DJ, not just the company, been in business?  You want a DJ who has entertained at weddings for years and performs at multiple weddings per year.  
  3. Know the DJ. You want to communicate with your specific DJ before your wedding day, whether in person, by email or on the phone. You don’t want to work with a stranger on your wedding day.
  4. Do you ‘click’? You want to feel comfortable with your DJ and feel that he/she understands your needs and wants in regards to music, emcee style and order of events.
  5. Professionalism. Ask if the DJ carries professional grade gear and back up equipment to each event.  Ensure you receive a contract outlining the terms of the agreement.  Ask about the attire he/she will wear. 
  6. You want a DJ who has a million-dollar liability policy to protect them and you.  Some venues require your vendors to provide proof of a liability policy.
